What is a softphone?

Cubix Softphone

Cubix is a Softphone - The term softphone is short for software telephone and that's just a fancy way of saying Internet telephone. Cubix is essentially an Internet telephone that allows you to make free phone calls to other people who are also running the same software on their computers.

Traditional telephones use phone lines that run back to your local telephone exchange to make phone calls. When you call someone, your local phone exchange sends the call to the phone exchange nearest the person you are calling and the phone company charges you for the call. When you make a call using Cubix and VoIP, your voice is first turned into digital packets which can be used by your computer. These packets are then sent over the Internet from your computer to the computer of the person you are calling where the packets are turned back into voice. The wonderful thing about this is that it does not cost you anything beyond your normal ISP costs!

You will of course need to be connected to the Internet to use Cubix and VoIP, but the actual softphone call costs nothing! And it does not matter if the person you are calling is across the road or on the other side of the world, since the call is sent over the Internet.

OEM Licensing

Cubix is available for OEM licensing. The basic version is completely free to take a copy and use for testing or as a once off instance for your personal use.

However there are many circumstances where you may want to use this software as part of a delivered business solution, on-sell this software or even create a re-branded version. That's where OEM licenses come in.

Would I need an OEM license?

The requirement for a licence depends on what you are planning to do with the Virbiage Softphone. If you just want to use it for yourself then it's completely free. However, if you are going to be distributing as your own, or if you are going to make money by distributing Cubix then you will need an OEM license.

For example, if you operate a call termination (pc to phone) network and wish to distribute Cubix with your service then you will need to license it first.

What does an OEM license entitle me to?

Basically an OEM license allows you to re-brand and rename Cubix and distribute it as your own. You could create a customised skin featuring your logo and you could build it into your software installer. We can of course give you any assistance you require to do this.

Cubix is a fully featured softphone with instant messaging and voicemail for Home, Business, Schools or anyone wanting to communicate around the world for free.

End User Licence Agreement

As an end user you agree to the terms and conditions of use as stated in the End User Licence Agreement (EULA).

As a third party licensee you need to have your own EULA with your users and the terms and conditions of the Virbiage EULA are a minimum requirement.

Can I make my own skin?

Yes, you can change the way the Virbiage softphone looks. We can do for you or you can do it yourself. If you do it yourself, because the process is quite involved, a complete set of instructions are available on request. Refer to the support page for the Cubix Skinning Guide.

Technical Specifications

What protocols does Cubix support?

Cubix uses an enhanced version of IAX by default; however standard IAX and SIP are also fully supported.

What codecs does Cubix support?

For carrying voice, the base codec is iLBC, however GSM, and G.711u/a are also included.

What is different between your enhanced IAX and normal IAX?

They are actually the same on the protocol level; however we make heavy use of the IAX message packets in order to communicate with the Cubix server. This is used for checking who is online, sending text messages, and things like that. We are happy to release the full specification if anyone is interested.

How much bandwidth does Cubix require?

A call uses about 3KB/sec (three kilobytes per second) inbound and outbound. This translates to a little over 10MB per hour. This is based on a single call using the standard codec (iLBC).
